🌿 Heart Check: What a Lawn Mower Taught Me About Hidden Roots & God’s Healing Work

A devotional for the weary-hearted mama who’s been mowing over what needs to be pulled up

🚨 “This is your heart.”

A Holy Whisper That Caught Me Off Guard

It started like any other nap window.

The baby had finally gone down, and instead of resting, I grabbed the mower. Because, well — moms don’t stop.

I was halfway through the yard, brain running through my to-do list, when I saw them:

Weeds.
Bold. Stubborn. Popping right back up.

And that’s when I heard it, not audibly but deep in my spirit:

“This is your heart.”

😔 Hiding in the Hustle

What I Didn’t Want to Face

I’ve spent years “mowing over” my emotions.
I’d smile through it, serve through it, and stay productive — because slowing down meant feeling things I didn’t want to face.

But beneath it all were roots I didn’t want to acknowledge:

  • Grief I never fully processed
  • Resentment I was too ashamed to admit
  • Insecurity I masked with busyness
  • Bitterness I spiritualized

One night, I was cutting strawberries for the kids’ lunchboxes when I just… stopped.
Tears welled up, out of nowhere. My husband walked in, and I just said,
“I don’t know why I’m crying — I’m just so tired, and I don’t even know of what.”

💬 When was the last time you paused long enough to let the emotions catch up with you?
What bubbled to the surface?

📖 Psalm 139 Hits Different in Real Life

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”
Psalm 139:23–24 (ESV)

David wasn’t being poetic here — he was being brave.

He wasn’t asking for a pep talk or peace.
He was asking for clarity.

This is the kind of prayer you whisper when you’re done pretending.
When you’re ready to face the things you’ve buried just to get through the day.

💬 Are you ready to invite God into the deeper places — not the polished ones, but the painful ones?

📌 The Word Doesn’t Skim — It Cuts to Heal

“The Word of God is alive and active… it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12, ESV

God’s Word doesn’t just affirm.
It reveals.
It lovingly confronts what we’d rather ignore.

And here’s the truth:
God doesn’t dig to shame us — He digs to heal us.

💬 What has God been gently but persistently trying to show you lately — that you might be resisting?

🌱 New Things Can’t Grow in Tangled Soil

“Forget the former things… I am doing a new thing!”
Isaiah 43:18–19, NIV

We pray for new things — peace, clarity, purpose —
But we’re still clinging to the old.

God doesn’t plant joy in bitterness.
He won’t force peace into cluttered grief.
Sometimes, He has to clear out the roots first.

💬 What are you still holding onto that might be taking up space where healing could grow?

👣 Real-Life Moments That Helped Me Heal

Some days I still mow over what’s hurting — but I’m learning to pause, to let the digging begin. Here are a few things that have helped me:

  • Pausing mid-chore to breathe and say, “Lord, what am I really feeling?”
  • Letting myself cry on the porch while watching the kids play
  • Asking for help instead of waiting until I break
  • Journaling at midnight — just one honest line
  • Reading one verse and letting that be enough

💬 What does healing look like for you right now? Even in small, messy moments?

🧤 Takeaways for the Root-Weary Mama

Want to start fresh but feel stuck? Here’s where you can begin:

  • 💧 Invite God into the ordinary.
He speaks in the laundry, the car rides, and through unexpected whispers.
  • 📖 Sit with one scripture.
You don’t need a plan — just space. Let Psalm 139 till the soil of your heart.
  • 🔍 Ask: “Lord, what have I been avoiding?”
Don’t fear His response. He’s always gentle.
  • 📝 Write just one line at night.
Something raw. Something real. It opens the door for truth to enter.

🙏 A Midnight Prayer

Lord, I’ve been mowing over things You’ve been inviting me to face.
I give You permission to go deep.
Show me the roots. Pull up what’s no longer fruitful.
Make space in me for something new — something alive.
In Yeshua Jesus’ name, amen.
